Developing a 'Single Pane of Glass' for Spacecraft Operations: Shared User Interfaces for Increasing Situation Awareness and Decreasing Development Effort
The "Single Pane of Glass" (SPoG) is an overarching concept that an operator should need but a single point of entry/single login to access every User Interface (II) needed to perform diverse required job functions. The implementation of such a concept, especially in a business as complex as satellite imagery acquisition and delivery, requires a good deal of forethought, familiarity with the roles/responsibilities of the larger user base, and an understanding of conflicts and difficulties that may prevent full adoption of the ideal. Here we describe both the rationale and the efforts of DigitalGlobe to implement a Single Pane of Glass describing both successes and continuing challenges. The potential benefits of a SPoG are many, including reduced system development time, easier maintainability, reduced operator training time and increased situation awareness both within and across operational domains (defined here broadly as ordering, mission planning, mission control, production generation, delivery, and common/infrastructure services).
