A compact, low cost, high isolation and wideband substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) fed slot antenna operating at 28GHz is presented. The bandwidth of designed antenna is 3.685 GHz. The proposed antenna is designed on a low cost FR408HR substrate. The simulated radiation efficiency is 92%. The design was then extended to a 5-element linear array for beamforming and beam scanning applications. It has 10dBi gain and 3dB beam width of 30°. The array maintains a high gain of 10dBi while scanning and beam width increase is negligible. A beam steering performance comparison is given between proposed design and a 5-element patch array. The isolation between the array elements is below −25dB. The dimensions of the realized design are 6mm × 19mm for the single element and 30mm × 19mm for the array.
