A novel type of metamaterial is proposed with low loss, wide band and small size, based on “ ” shaped structure and high frequency simulation software (HFSS), it can be used for the application of Ku band. The metamaterial unit is arranged in periodic structures, placed on one side of FR4 substrate. Firstly, the simulated software and metamaterial model are introduced; secondly, the transmission and reflection coefficients can be calculated by HFSS; finally, the Effective electromagnetic parameters extracted by S-parameter retrieval method indicates that the “ ” shaped structure has a double negative frequency band range from 8.75 GHz to 13.90 GHz. Its absolute bandwidth reaches 5.15 GHz with relative bandwidth of 45.47%, the electrical length less than 0.05, and its biggest loss of 0.27 dB per unit. This novel metamaterial structure with great performance lay good foundation for the widely use of metamaterial in Ku band.
