Finger Braille Teaching System Using Tablet Computer

Finger Braille is a kind of tactual communication medium for the deafblind persons who had onset of blindness first. Deafblind persons can communicate only through interpreters, because general non-disabled persons are not skilled in Finger Braille. A Finger Braille teaching system between non-disabled senders and deafblind receivers has been developed. The teaching system recognizes the non-disabled sender's speech and displays the associated dot pattern of Finger Braille. The non-disabled sender can then dot Finger Braille on the fingers of the deafblind receiver by observing the displayed dot pattern. In this paper, we adopted a 10 inches Android tablet computer and developed the teaching system. The results of the evaluation experiment about fundamental functions showed that the accuracy of speech recognition was 99.1%, except for the misrecognition of the interjections; the accuracy of the conversion to reading was 99.7%; the accuracy of the conversion to Braille code was 100%. Therefore, it was considered that the fundamental functions of the teaching system were effective.
