The 21st century global computing infrastructure and electric power grid are undergoing fundamental changes due to an ever increasing demand for faster compute resources and reliable electric power. These critically linked infrastructures are already showing strain from the rapid development and relatively high electric power requirements from data center installation. Data centers have emerged as significant users of electric energy in the power grid. Recently in Ireland, the planned installation of multiple Microsoft data centers was delayed by a lack of electric power infrastructure, with the local utility requiring Microsoft to generate a portion of its own power until the power infrastructure is improved. Optimizing data center design, performance, and taking advantage of energy scheduling enables participation in electric markets. This panel will discuss novel solutions of such interesting topics including green data center design, performance co-optimization of energy and workload, electricity market participation of data centers, resource scheduling for energy efficiency, and the implementation of a large-scale industrial microgrid for a specialized data center load.
