摘要

The current paper presents a comparison and evaluation of laser scanning and photogrammetry for the digital documentation of artworks from the point of view of conservation documentation and inspection. The Athens School of Fine Arts collection of sculptures contains hundreds of artworks, with a variety of size, material and texture. the artworks examination and restoration, and digital documentation have to be made available to both conservators and the collection's authorities. Our fundamental aim is that the current project will play an important role for the definition of a set of workflow activities for the digital documentation of the whole collection. The selected artifacts are characteristic representatives of the collection and they are expected to confront particular needs of the collection and aid the conservation and display decision making. The selected artifacts are based on specific parameters like material, size shape complexity and types of deterioration. This study enabled us to experiment with an interdisciplinary team and investigate the benefits of digital technologies in the field of art conservation. The resulted precise three-dimensional colored replicas of the artworks provides a accurate and outstanding opportunity for scholars to examine and diagnose and audience to appraise. Conservators primarily focus on condition monitoring for reconstruction decision making. Conservation specialists could rely on precise and high-resolution 3D models for inspection and design restoration and monitoring plans.
