Automatic target recognition (ATR) generally refers to the autonomous or aided target detection and recognition by computer processing of data from a variety of sensors such as forward looking infrared (FLER), synthetic aperture radar (SAR), inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR), laser radar (LADAR), millimeter wave (MMW) radar, multispectral/hyperspectral sensors, low-light television (LLTV), video, etc. SAR is a coherent active imaging method that utilizes the motion of a radar mounted on a vehicle such as an aircraft (airborne SAR) or a satellite (spaceborne SAR) to synthesize the effect of a large aperture radar. Motivated by the unique character of fuzzy logic system, simultaneously handling numerical data and linguistic knowledge, and the promising knowledge-based approach, we propose an FLS-based approach to SAR ATR.
