Extraction of Winter Wheat Planting Area in Binzhou-Dongying City Based on the WBSI Images of the Key Growth Phase

The Wide Band Spectral Imager (WBSI) onboard the Tiangong-II space lab was launched at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center of China on September 15, 2016 which has 14 visible and near-infrared (VNIR) spectral bands covering the range from 403-990 nm at a spatial resolution of 100 m. In this paper, the Visible and Near Infrared imagery (VNIR) from the WBSI Level 2 data acquired on October 14, 2016 (the planting phase of winter wheat) and March 18, 2017 (the green-up phase of winter wheat) were selected to estimate the winter wheat planting area using the Decision Tree model (DT) at Binzhou and Dongying City, the core demonstration zones of Chinese R & D Demonstration Project on Bohai-rim's Breadbasket. The experimental results showed that an overall accuracy of the winter wheat planting area estimation was about 90% at the regions where there were not cloud and fog contamination, which indicated that the VNIR imagery from the WBSI could be used to extract the winter wheat planting area at the regional scale. It was found that the Band 1 and Band 2 and Band 14 of the VNIR sensor of the WBSI was useful to discriminate the winter wheat from some rural residents, the remaining weeds and the others. In 2017, the estimated planting area of winter wheat was about 295419 ha and 64715 ha at Binzhou and Dongying City, respectively.
