This paper presents a hexagonal shaped resonator modified into a EBG structure. Using the proposed structure, an attempt has been made to improve the bandwidth of patch antenna as well as radiation efficiency. This work elucidates a Patch Antenna loaded with a hexagonal shaped split ring resonator magnetically coupled into an EBG structure. The antenna is made reconfigurable using two `L' shaped slots. The said antenna and the metamaterial design has been evaluated for its performance with an antenna load. The Metamaterial loaded antenna improves the bandwidth by 10% (3 times) as well as radiation efficiency by a percentage of 3.54%.
