As a new bionic swarm intelligence optimization algorithm, bacterial foraging algorithm (BFA) has been successfully applied to many engineering problems. We proposed an application of modified bacterial foraging algorithm (MBFA) for fault location in distribution networks. Using the optimization mechanism of the algorithm, a mathematical model of fault location is constructed, and solved the fault section. Simulation examples show that this method can be reliable positioning when whether single-point of failure occur or multiple points of failure occur, and when the information is distorted this algorithm also has a good fault tolerance. The MBFA is compared with the traditional BFA. The proposed algorithm is superior to the traditional BFA in terms of convergence, accuracy and efficiency.
