In this paper, through the analysis of HVDC commutation failure mechanism, the influence of commutation voltage reduction on commutation failure is studied. Based on this, a method which can restrain commutation failure and subsequent commutation failure and improve the recovery performance of the system is studied, that is voltage compensation slope VDCOL control strategy. Through modeling and Simulation on CIGRE HVDC benchmark test system, the validity of voltage compensated variable slope VDCOL control strategy is verified. Variable slope VDCOL is beneficial to reduce the probability of HVDC commutation failure.
