Exposed and hidden nodes are key issues, pertaining to the interaction between neighboring nodes, that impact the performance of high-speed narrowband power line communication (HNPLC) networks. This paper models the node interactions with an HNPLC protocol interference model and presents a distributed cross-layer scheme based on crosstalk permission (CP), named CSMA/CA+CP for the practical HNPLC network. This scheme handles exposed senders (EXSs) and hidden receivers (HIRs) jointly based on dual-channel tactics and an extended handshaking protocol. Performance evaluation results in a typical HNPLC network demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms CSMA/CA in terms of average throughput and average delay.
