Underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASNs) are a type of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), developed for gathering information from the undersea environment. Due to the undersea environment features, enhancing the network lifetime is a significant object. This fact has motivated us to investigate a solution that decreases the power consumption in these networks. The relay setting for decreasing transmission distance is a suitable solution for increasing the network lifetime. For fixing a relay node in an appropriate place, this paper presents an algorithm which is named Relay Node Setting Algorithm (RNSA), that works in a 3D UASN. The proposed algorithm for improving the network lifetime, upon entry the relay node, finds an appropriate place for it. Simulation results illustrate that the RNSA algorithm presents better efficiency about the network lifetime.
