Fresh Air as Simple as a Fresh Coat of Paint

The increasing demand for more environmentally friendly interior coatings is going hand in hand with stricter regulations of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds (S-VOC), and biocides in the final products. The proposed new requirements of the European Ecolabel state that the total level of residual monomers in polymers may not be more than 100 ppm. Can the United States requirements be far behind? Furthermore, there is a discussion about reducing the allowed amount of 2-methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-one (MIT) to 15 ppm. As a producer of waterborne polymer binders for indoor coatings, we have to consider all these proposals and discussions. Therefore, an acrylic binder that meets the proposed requirements regarding reduced levels of residual monomers and biocides has been developed. By including an opacity pigment as a replacement for titanium dioxide in the coating formulation, the environmental profile of the coating can be further improved with an even wider application scope.
