As pigment dispersion related problems become more frequent than those previously encountered, and requirements regarding color reproducibility become increasingly rigorous, new demands for pigment wetting agents and dispersants are needed to meet these pigment stabilization issues. The advances in new polymeric dispersants in the last 20 years have made significant improvements in the process of wetting and stabilizing pigments. Therefore, many dispersant technologies are emerging in the market place to better stabilize smaller pigment particles and prevent flocculation from occurring. This paper will explain pigment/dispersant interfaces as well as how harmonizing and optimizing these interactions will lead to a better pigment dispersion.
