Conclusions: In summary, preliminary results from the current study suggest that a bi-layered scaffold that compositionally (with insoluble elastic matrix) and structurally (i.e., circumferentially aligned collagen fibers) resembles native vessels can be fabricated using the electrochemical fabrication method. Future studies will focus on assessing vascular cell response (e.g., scaffold mechanics after culture, SMC migration, elastic matrix production, and endothelialization). Overall, electrochemically fabricated elastin containing bi-layered collagen scaffolds have the potential to be used for vascular tissue engineering applications.
