Conclusions: Overall, these results suggest that macrophage phenotype plays an important role in tissue vascularization, and that temporal control of macrophage phenotype may be used to enhance blood vessel growth. Future work will aim to characterize macrophage gene expression profiles in response to developing vessels, and identify phenotypic differences in macrophage morphology and co-localization with vessel networks during angiogenesis. Ultimately, this work will aid in the design of immunomodulatory strategies that promote vascularization and integration of engineered tissues for regenerative medicine.
