When fault occurs in hybrid transmission line, the complicated refraction and reflection effects may happen during the propagation of fault traveling wave, this can lead to the decrease of fault ranging accuracy. To increase the fault ranging accuracy, the traveling wave propagation characteristics of overhead line - submarine cable hybrid line are analyzed, and a double terminal traveling wave ranging method of overhead line - submarine cable hybrid line is proposed, so the detailed double terminal ranging result can be obtained by analyzing the initial result. PSCAD is utilized to establish the simulation model of 500kV overhead line-submarine cable hybrid line and the simulation is carried out. The simulation results show that the double terminal traveling wave ranging method of hybrid line which is proposed can be simple, convenient, accurate and reliable to determine the specific location of the fault point of overhead Line - submarine cable hybrid line.
