The energy flux of blast waves has been described theoretically for underwater explosions by Cole in Ref. [1]. Although developed for underwater explosions, this theoretical description applies to other media as well-specifically to explosions in air and underground explosions. Once the energy flux at a particular distance is obtained, the total energy can be determined by multiplying the calculated energy flux by the surface area involved at that distance. For free-air bursts, the area is the area of a sphere and for surface bursts that of a hemisphere. These calculations allow the determination of the portion of the total detonation energy which is converted into blast in that medium.
