A photonic crystal fiber with elliptical air holes in its center is proposed and investigated for high birefringence and flattened negative dispersion. It is shown that the proposed structure provides a dispersion of -419.5 ps/(nm.km) with a fluctuation of 9 ps/(nm.km) over the S+C+L+U wavelength bands which makes it suitable for dispersion compensation. Furthermore, it provides a high birefringence of 0.033 at the wavelength of 1.55 μm which is useful for sensor applications. The effect of fabrication tolerance on the dispersion characteristic is also reported.
