Transformer design in a medium voltage DC/DC converter for a DC collection network

DC is regarded as an attractive alternative to conventional AC technology in collection networks for large-scale wind and PV generation systems. Playing the role in the stepping up voltage and exporting the power from the individual generation units, DC/DC converters are one of the most crucial parts of the DC collector. Isolated medium-power DC/DC converters would require a medium voltage medium frequency (MVMF) transformer. The design of such transformer is not straightforward and several design trade-offs have to be taken into account in the process. This paper presents a DC/DC converter solution based on a three-phase single active bridge (SAB) topology for DC collection network, and introduces its operational principles. After proposing a general modeling and design procedure of the MVMF transformers, this paper compares different parameter choices and their effects on the transformer performance.
