This paper brings into attention two types of rare earth-less electrical machines designed to be used for an automotive cooling fan (CF) application. A low-power induction machine and a variable reluctance synchronous machine will be analyzed based on the requirements of a 48V/850W CF. Specific design issues requiring attention when designing these two motors for such an applications will be pointed out. The analysis is done via numerical means and it is focused on obtaining the most important electro-mechanical quantities. Based on these analyses a side-by-side comparison between two motors is performed and some conclusions will be made in the final part of the paper.
