The purpose of this paper is to assess a number of factors affecting the costs of a sports hall, and create awareness about these factors to help future implementation of sports halls. Using a mixed method approach, empirical data from 109 sports halls projects in Norway were collected through a literature review, a questionnaire-based survey and from the Norwegian Ministry of Culture's database of applications for gaming funds. In addition, an extensive amount of emails and phone calls were conducted to fill in gaps in the survey material. The quantitative data results revealed that some of the analyzed factors had been affecting the construction costs. The most important factors identified were 1) project delivery system, 2) location, 3) project ownership and 4) part of a school project. The factors analysed in this paper have been chosen based on data available. The final choice of which factors to actually include in the analysis was based on insights stemming from the literature review and discussions with supervisors and senior experts in the industry. However, the paper has not analyzed the effects the selected factors have on a project when occurring simultaneously. This paper has focused on factors affecting construction costs that few researchers have analyzed in the past, especially in Norway. The paper has identified some factors that affect the construction costs of a sports hall, and the findings could be used as a "road map" for similar projects. Paper type - Research paper
