High-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system is a very complex nonlinear system and is difficult to establish an accurate mathematical model. The conventional PID controller is simple and easy to implement for the rectifier. Under the influence of any small external disturbances or during steady state, the conventional PID controller provides a satisfactory response. However, when there is any large disturbance or fluctuation in the HVDC transmission system, the PID controller will not produce desired response in terms of settling time and overshoot For this reason, a rectifier controller based on the Action Dependent Heuristic Dynamic Programming (ÄDHDP) algorithm is designed in this paper. The proposed controller does not rely on the model of control system, which can avoid any interference factors due to the errors in control system model The simulation model of HVDC transmission system was set up using MATLAB / Simulink platform and M file was written and called through the S function when needed. The effectiveness of the designed rectifier controller based on ÂDHDP algorithm is validated using the simulation results.
