Addition of network monitoring process usually leads to higher power consumption since more diagnosis information needs to be exchanged throughout the network. Low Power Listening (LPL) provides a mechanism to prolong the network's lifetime. In this work, we evaluate the impact of LPL on the performance of the network monitoring schemes in WSNs. ContikiMAC is used as the LPL mechanism. Centralized and distributed monitoring approaches are both evaluated. Simulation results indicate that while the LPL mechanism helps reduce power consumption significantly in both schemes, even more reduction can be achieved using the distributed approach. In addition, detection accuracy of both schemes is not significantly different. This outcome emphasizes that, with LPL enabled, a distributed approach for network monitoring should be considered when power consumption is a criterion.
