Ultraviolet (UV) imaging technology has the characteristics of strong anti-interference ability, high sensitivity and small size, leading to a broad application prospect in corona and partial discharge detection. However, the ultraviolet image analyzing technology nowadays is always affected by external environment and interference, which cause extra errors. Therefore, the ultraviolet image analyzing method needs further improvement. In this article, an effective detection method for the ultraviolet images of space discharge sources was studied. A noise reduction algorithm for ultraviolet images was designed, together with an identification and automatic extraction algorithm for deviant areas. The locating of discharge sources and the calculation of discharge distribution were achieved successfully on the platform in the laboratory, which validated the theoretical algorithm. The discharge characteristics were analyzed statistically, and the technical needs for the ultraviolet measuring platform and analyzing system were summarized. As a conclusion, an evaluation method for ultraviolet images was obtained.
