Biometric Bit String Generation from Handwritten Initials on Smart Phones

As smart-phones have rapidly spread, biometric authentication has recently attracted much attention as a user authentication technology for them. Handwritten signatures are one of the most promising biometric modalities for user authentication on smart-phones because a user interface involving pens or fingers is commonly used on such devices and biometric-specific sensors are not necessary. On the other hand, in biometric authentication, template-protection technologies are indispensable for enhancing the security of the biometric template that stores a user's biometric information. Several studies have been reported on biometric-bit-string generation from handwritten signatures, which is indispensable for template protection. However, handwritten signatures are not necessarily suitable from the viewpoint of usability for smart-phones with small touch-screens. Therefore, to design a more secure and convenient template-protection method for smart-phones, we propose a method to generate biometric bit strings from handwritten initials and demonstrate its effectiveness through simulation experiments.
