With the modern microwave technology development, more requirements for miniaturized microstrip antennas have been put forward. In this paper, we use the I-shaped artificial electromagnetic structure, which are etched on the conventional rectangular microstrip antenna to realize the miniaturization of microstrip antenna. The original size of the microstrip antenna working at 5.8GHz is 18.7mm × 13.63mm. The 15 I-shaped artificial electromagnetic structures are etched to reduce the antenna size to 14.1mm × 11.75mm. Under the condition of maintaining the bandwidth and the maximum gain, the size of the antenna is reduced by 35.2%. The measurement results indicate that the antenna performance matches well with the simulation results.
