Stabilizing AC Distributed Power Systems with Constant-Power Loads Using Tunable Active Damping

Many electronic loads in ac distributed power systems (DPSs) behave as constant-power loads (CPLs) which can have a destabilizing effect. Several stability criteria based on the generalized Nyquist criterion have been proposed to study the stability of ac DPSs. Based on these criteria, passive and active damping techniques have been developed to stabilize the system. In this paper, a novel stabilization method that utilizes active damping techniques is proposed. The proposed method monitors the load bus voltage in real time to determine the system stability and stabilizes the system with an auxiliary converter circuit. The proposed methodology is adaptive to changes in the system topology and parameters (which is important since many loads may be connected/disconnected and/or change their power demand), avoids the energy losses associated with typical passive filters, and is less conservative than traditional methods.
