With the recent advancement and rapid proliferation of wireless devices, Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET) is becoming a major immerging technology in the field of telecommunication networks. A MANET is a collection of wireless nodes that can dynamically form a network to exchange information without using any pre-existing fixed network infrastructure. Due to the mobility of nodes in MANETs, local connections changes frequently and makes the network topology change constantly. In order to maintain the local connections up-to-date and track neighbor relationship between the nodes, each node broadcasts hello packets at regular intervals. However, sending periodic messages at a fixed interval can cause unnecessary traffic in the wireless network, and so may give reduced performance in the presence of frequent topology changes. This paper proposes an adaptive Hello messaging scheme for neighbor discovery using Differential evolution optimization (DE). The proposed scheme provides a self-tuning method for automatically increase the routing performance by adapting the value of hello interval. By using the DE, each node has the ability to select the optimal configuration for Hello interval parameter that can improve the global performance of the network. The proposed scheme is implemented under NS-2 simulator and tested using different scenarios. Our simulation results have shown that, compared to the default fixed timer approach, the proposed scheme could effectively improve control traffic overhead without sacrificing other performances such as packet delivery ratio and Average end to end delay and without using manual configuration.
