MIMO technologies have been successful in cellular systems. Spatial diversity can provide diversity gain and is widely used to improve the stability of the signals, while spatial multiplexing can provide multiplexing gain for making full use of spectrum resources. Meanwhile, there is a trade-off between diversity and multiplexing called DMT. In this paper, the system performance of the open-loop transmission diversity and open-loop multiplexing technology in the eight transmission modes of the LTE system are studied with three scenarios through dynamic system-level simulation based on OPNET. The advantages of spatial diversity and spatial multiplexing are verified by channel utilization, delay and throughput, SNR and packets loss rate, etc. In simulation, we find out that the density of users can be used as a reference point of diversity and multiplexing. The results show that the communication performance of the central cell is much better by using the trade-off method than each single method.
