Highway engineering in saline soils in cold regions is challenging for corrosion and ground heaving due to frost and salt expansion at low ambient temperature. This paper presents an innovative construction technique, namely the Bagged Reinforced Concrete (RC) Shaft, for deep foundation construction in saline soils. The key of this technique is to use an anti-corrosion geotextile container to isolate the RC shaft from the saline soil. The main processes in this new method are summarized, key parameters are presented, and quality control issues are discussed. While this method is promising for protecting deep foundations in a saline environment, issues such as the impact of the bag to vertical and horizontal loading capacity and resistance to ground heaving due to frost or salt expansion need to be further investigated.
