Innovative Testing of Ontario's Asphalt Materials

The Bimminous Section of the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is responsible for developing and maintaining standards and test methods for bituminous materials used in the construction and operation of Ontario's provincial highway system. In support of this work, MTO carries out specialized field and laboratory studies to evaluate construction practices and the performance of materials used on provincial highways. The Bituminous Section has developed and implemented several emerging, innovative, and practical laboratory and field test methods. We continue to liaise with national and international researchers and standards development agencies to remain current, and integrate suitable advancements into our standards. Continued evolution of construction materials drives the need for innovation in testing and acceptance. The paper provides an overview of the test methods, examples of test data, and analysis for procedures that: 1. Evaluate the quality of asphalt cement and predict field performance; and 2. Evaluate performance of the asphalt mix for rutting, fatigue cracking, and moisture sensitivity.
