Status of SDI Ecosystem for UHDTV

Coaxial cable and SDI have been the workhorseof the video broadcast industry for decades. It has proven tobe a reliable and cost effective infrastructure with countlesshours of TV has been broadcasted using this technology.With the transition to Ultra High Definition Television(UHDTV) broadcasters are faced with the choice of how tosupport this inflection point. Transitioning to an InternetProtocol (IP) infrastructure is one option, but the option tocontinue to leverage the existing SDI coaxial plant isanother. This paper will provide the reader detail on thestatus of the SDI underlying technologies needed to supportUHDTV. This paper will explore the standards, cables,connectors, semiconductor components and video broadcastthat are the platform for the SDI UHDTV video broadcastinfrastructure.
