Pigment concentrates continue to be of increasing demand for use in a variety of applications from protective and marine to general architectural or industrial coatings. The ease of use, compatibility within various systems, and ability to customize colors continues to drive companies away from direct grinding of pigments. As demand for pigment concentrates increases, so does the demand for a next generation dispersing agent. This paper discusses the use of a novel dispersant that provides excellent color strength, pigment stabilization, low viscosity, compatibility within a vast range of coatings, as well as high efficiency at low usage levels. In particular, iron oxide pigments will be the focus of this dispersing technology as they represent the second largest inorganic pigment group behind titanium dioxide. This paper will also discuss stabilization mechanisms as well as utilizing zeta potential to determine dispersing efficiency.
