Corrosion control coatings reduce the cost of ownership and extend the service life of assets against degradative environmental conditions. Much research has been done on the incorporation of protective pigments and additives into coatings to enhance its functional properties. The polymer matrix that binds the discontinuous pigment and inhibitor phases dictates the diffusivity of environmental and contamination derived penetrant molecules. The progress of small molecules like water and salts through coatings to the substrate is influenced by their interaction with both the polymer and the discontinuous phase. Possessing quantifiable data that would reveal the underlying understanding of how the polymer matrix and coatings properties are influenced by exposure to service conditions, i.e., in the presence of oxygen, water, and salts, would allow real and beneficial pathways to optimize polymers for anticorrosive coatings. If we understood when, how, and why the polymer functionality responds to penetrant molecules, then the release rate and transport of anticorrosion additives to the substrate could be optimized for anticorrosive performance as the anticorrosive additive behavior depends on the correct proportions of small molecule sorption.
