Energy conversion and momentum coupling from nano-second pulse laser irradiation of 1-μm wavelength on an aluminum target in air atmosphere have been investigated over a wide range of laser pulse energy values from sub-J to sub-kJ. On the baisi of the experimental results, a conceptual system of laser launch of a spherical vehicle and a donut-beam is investigated. The launch capability is determined by the change in the thrust force as a vehicle ascent, and is maximized mainly by the trade-off among the thrust efficiency and the stability margin.
