Computer-based analysis of an urban 20 kV medium-voltage network

The supply of energy in urban areas is in a pattern of rapid change due to a growing share of renewable energies, an increased distributed generation (DG), a rising number of electric vehicles (EV's) and heat pumps in distribution networks. Planners and distribution system operators (DSO's) are thus faced with a range of new challenges. The aim of this paper is to investigate these forward-looking requirements in the context of an urban medium-voltage network by analysing the actual state of the grid together with the effects of increasing centralized and decentralized loads and sources. The analysis of the urban medium-voltage shows that the network examined is operating today at an optimal level e.g. with no overloading, and that an integration of future loads and sources into the present network is possible in the future without high investments in new equipment (regulating transformers).
