This paper summarizes findings from a DNV GL study of firefighter rooftop operations, the hazards they may encounter working around PV arrays, and means in which hazards can be substantially reduced. The study included a survey of firefighters focused on the impact of rooftop PV on firefighter operations in the context of evolving code requirements. The study also includes a model risk analysis of various methods of shock protection in PV arrays. The paper expands on the original study by discussing the anticipated 2017 NEC rapid shutdown requirements and the new standards that are needed to evaluate PV arrays for compliance.
