Unitized bonded structures offer considerable opportunity for improved efficiencies over mechanically fastened joints, including weight and cost savings as well as enhanced agility and adaptability in the manufacturing process through reduction of the need for specialized tooling. However, assurances of proper bond quality hinder certification of unitized bonded structure. As part of DARPA Open Manufacturing, the TRUST program, led by Lockheed Martin, aims to develop an approach demonstrating the reliability of bonded composites through process control.
