Performance Evaluation of Underground Coal Mines: A Case Study

Performance measurement of coal mines is an important aspect of management planning and control. In general, performance is measured in terms of productivity, efficiency and profitability. However, factors such as safety also play a very important role in performance evaluation. Presently, Indian coal industry is in the midst of swirling changes driven by both internal and external factors. These have forced the coal industry to rethink and restructure its business activities in order to survive and grow in this highly competitive environment. To bridge the yawning gap in performance and to compete with the international coal-producing giants, it is imperative that attention should be focussed on performance improvement of an organisation which is the integration of all unit level mine performance. In this paper, the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and fuzzy set theory are investigated as tools for assessing the relative efficiency of similar type of mines. The application of these techniques is demonstrated through a case study example of a group of underground coal mines. It is inferred that the techniques can be used by the mine management in their planning and control process.
