Internet of Things (IoT) is the future of how the devices across the globe will be connected all together and interoperations between them.(Book) Ranging from controlling a lamp to controlling a power house from anywhere remotely carries many risks and hazards in between. The operation of connected devices happens through internet and multiple layers. This paper will project the current security issues and the countermeasures to make the upcoming IoT projects safe and reliable. The current existing security issues mainly occur at the authentication and communication side. A secure protocol is necessary on how these things communicate and who all are authorized to make changes in them. In IoT all the remote independent devices are connected through internet and communicate rapidly all the time. These devices are grouped accordingly and they need their privacy and security within their groups. All the sensors that are used in the IoT by the industry need to be very secure and robust. The communication within the devices group should be easy and any communication with the outside devices which do not belong to the industry will need a secure authentication. Attacks can happen at multiple layers. Data can be spoofed or modified. IoT deals with multiple departments like home appliances, transportation, industries/factories, medical systems etc. Attacks vary from department to department. The major challenges in IoT which will be researched in the paper will be security of communication and finding the risks in sensor layer of the various areas of IoT application like wearable's, building and home automation, smart cities, smart manufacturing, health care and automotive.
