Hydrogen roadmaps - Modelling of the development of hydrogen mobility in Germany, based on current initiatives
The necessity as well as the complexity of the development of a comprehensive infrastructure for the success of hydrogen mobility has been acknowledged years ago. As a reaction, many countries and especially today's core markets - i.e. Japan, California, and Germany - have brought to life initiatives, programs, and dedicated roll-out plans to support hydrogen refueling station (HRS) network development and market penetration of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV). Goals have been set to, for example, 100 stations until 2015 in Japan [1], 68 stations until 2016 in California [2], and 50 stations until 2015 in Germany [3]. Figure 1 exemplarily shows the commercialization pathway for hydrogen refueling infrastructure in Germany until 2023. The current status at the end of 2015 suggests that these core markets are still working strongly to fulfill their commitment, but it appears that they are all somewhat behind schedule. Challenges for reaching these short term targets and for implementing long term commercialization plans lie within the complex interplay of several stakeholders and the countries follow different strategies to tackle them.
