One of the major issue nowadays is a global warming or better known as the greenhouse effect wherein carbon dioxide emissions are identified as one of the main cause. Whilst, the combustion of fossil fuels in transportations has been identified as one of the major contribution to cause the large amounts of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere. Consequently, an interest in electric vehicles (EVs) demonstrated by automakers, government agencies and customers make it as more significance research. Since electric motors are the heart of EVs, it is a serious call for researchers to expand modern electric motors. As one of the candidates, flux switching machine (FSM) is introduced in order to cope with the requirement. This paper proposes a new alternate circumferential and radial flux (AlCiRaF) of permanent magnet flux switching machines (PMFSM) for light weight electric vehicles. The AlCiRaF PMFSM is first compared with the conventional PMFSM and based on several design limitations and specifications, design improvements are then accomplished by utilizing deterministic optimization method. The optimized design machine has finally achieved maximum torque and power of 47.43Nm and 12.85kW, respectively, slightly better than that of conventional PMFSM.
