Understanding the significance of precise torque control of electrical machines and the importance of accurate motor parameter determination to achieve the control precisely, this manuscript proposes a new method of identifying varying parameters of permanent magnet synchronous machines through a two-step on-line estimation algorithm incorporating iron losses. An improved machine model incorporating iron losses has been developed to identify on-line, the inductances, permanent magnet flux linkage and stator resistance as a function of operating temperature. The effect of iron losses on the accuracy of estimation of machine parameters has been studied under varying operating conditions and the performance has been compared with conventional estimation without iron losses. The developed identification technique improves the precision of online estimation and can be applied towards maximum efficiency or adaptive control of PMSM. The mathematical model and experimental results have been presented for validation.
