Switched reluctance machines (SRMs) benefit from a low-cost and robust structure in comparison to wound-rotor or permanent-magnet synchronous machines, which makes them an interesting alternative in several applications. Especially in the last decade, there have been several studies proposing their use in propulsion. Therefore, the SRM research has mainly focused on improving the torque density and the efficiency of those drives.This paper aims to complement the existing SRM research by studying the optimization of a highly dynamic SRM from an electromagnetic design perspective. Both conventional and mutually coupled SRMs are considered. A multi-objective optimization framework is set up for maximizing the torque for a given volume and losses while minimizing the rotor inertia. Performance of various machine topologies are compared.
