Interactions between two identical monochromatic wave trainswith a relative approaching angle of 24° were experimentallyinvestigated in a well-designed ’X’ configuration. Wave trainswith different amplitudes and frequencies were generated. Theresults showed that the interactions were strongly dependent onboth wave amplitudes and frequencies. The wave trains canapproximately maintain its initial status after the interactions forwaves with small initial steepness. However, for larger waves,the interactions were enhanced and the surfaces weresignificantly distorted, no longer two-dimensional after theencounter. During the interaction process, there was an obviousincrease in wave height, reaching the maximum amplificationabout 1.55 times of the initial height at the middle of theinteraction region. Furthermore, the images captured by highspeedcameras illustrated that two wave trains enter theinteraction region at the same time and then merged togetherduring the interaction process, resulting in increase of the waveamplitude. The combined wave crest was initially composed oftwo straight segments and gradually morphed into a straightsegment from the plan view. Then, wave broke in thedownstream part of the interaction region with a crescent patternof the crest.
