The optimal structural layout of non-conventional aircraft configurations is not yet fully understood. To determine a structural layout of these new aircraft configurations a design methodology such as topology optimization is suggested which is an enhancement to the conventional design methods. This technique is shown to be valuable in applications where there is little or no knowledge available on the optimal structural layout This paper presents the use of topology optimization for determining the conceptual design of the Blended-Wing-Body commercial passenger aircraft and Unmanned Air Vehicle structure. The paper discusses the approach used for carrying out the topology optimization and the influence of various parameters on the structural optimization result.
