Preparation and characterization of silica-titania aerogel monoliths by sol-gel method

The sol-gel method and supercritical fluids drying have been carried out for the successfully prepared of silica-titania aerogel monoliths. The obtained aerogel exhibits high properties with a density of 0.135 g/cm3. We characterized the microstructure and physical characteristic of silica-titania aerogel by the specific surface area, SEM, Hot-disk and FTIR. From the results shown that sample possess high specific surface area (614.6 m2/g) and large pore volume (4.4 cm3/g). Thermal conductivity coefficients of aerogel monoliths were in the range of 0.026-0.039W/(m·K) as temperature increased to 400°C, implying a good heat insulation stability. This technology will be helpful to provide a specific exploitation mechanism of silica-titania aerogel and to broaden aerogel applications in environment catalyst.
