In order to pinpoint the most promising transport architectures for lowering the cost-per-bit, planning and forecasting tools must be equipped with the resources to assess different types of architectures used in the client- and line-side, as well as in the interconnection between them. This includes, for instance, being able to compare planning scenarios based on fixed transponders or Sliceable Bandwidth-Variable Transponders (SBVTs), with and without an intermediate switching layer. In this paper, we take a step towards making this comparison more complete by extending a simulation model comparing fixed and flexible network architectures to also consider the requirements for express optical switching (ROADMs) and new fiber links. The inclusion of these factors for each particular architecture contributes to a more thorough total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis that can guide the decision process of an operator.
